Wholesome Ideas for Airplane Meals & Snacks

Posted on 14:35 by Unknown

Oh mi goodness! We will be in Chicago tomorrow! It has been over a year since we've been back in the states. We will be traveling through the states for the next 2 months... if you haven't yet, check out the RO4Y Tour dates! If we are coming into your area, please let me know! We love meeting and connecting with new people  :o)

So... I thought it was about time I wrote up a post about preparing wholesome meals and snacks take on the airplane. We've been traveling back and forth enough times that I have a whole list of healthy stuff to choose from!

I typically carry on a small suitcase full of snacks & individual meals for us... we always end up with leftovers, but better that then have nothing!

Nowadays, it is hard to fly and feel great by the end of your trip. Flying really does take a lot out of you and on top of that... healthy food choices in the airports are pretty slim. That's why it is so important to plan ahead & bring your own healthy food and good water to strengthen your body to stand against the stress of traveling.

The bottled water in airports are expensive and will leave you dried out. We like to travel with our filtered water bottles and simply fill up with free tap water. We love that it filters out the junk and lets us thoroughly quench our thirst. I always end up feeling more thirsting after drinking bottle water because it is purely dead, tasteless water and a total rip off.

Now, I won't get started on the food because I think you all know the direction I'm going here, but one thing I've learned when traveling with my girls and hubby... is to load up on the good fats. Low-fat food makes cranky & tired kids! Which means don't overload on crackers, cookies and fruit. High carbs and sugar calls for hungry, emotional kids that will leave you exhausted & short-tempered by the time you arrive to your destination.

It really makes a difference to plan ahead and prepare your own meals & snacks to take on the airplane. Loading up on nourishing foods rich in good fats will have you & your family feeling good and satisfied wherever you go! When I say good fats, I'm talking about real butter, coconut oil, whole milk, real eggs, nuts and raw cheeses.

Before reading on... let me tell you from personal experience that you CAN bring your own food onto the plane! A friend once told me that it was against the rules, but I have not been told that directly from an airport staff.

Traveling In Style With Wholesome Food
Here's what I've packed for our plane trips over the last few years:

Savories
  • Raw cheese
  • Coconut rice & beans
  • Cortido & fresh sour cream
  • Hard-boiled eggs (girls love it with sea salt and fresh sour cream!)
  • Fritatas in a sandwich or tortillas
  • Soaked & dehydrated nuts - almonds, pecans, pistachios & cashews
  • Salads w/ homemade dressing (yeah, my girls dig in them!)
  • Fresh veggies - carrot sticks, sliced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers & sliced avocado
  • Raw, whole milk (I've had no problems carry on a small bottle of milk for each of my kids!)
  • Popcorn - popped in coconut oil and topped with lots of butter (a little raw honey too!)
  • Crackers - sourdough or soaked
  • Raw honey, coconut oil & nut butter sandwiches (using sourdough english muffins)
  • Beef jerky
  • Plantain chips (can get at Trader Joe's)

Sweets

  • Flourless Chocolate Almond Cookies
  • Nut butter cookies
  • Coconut Custard Cake
  • Banana Bread
  • Homemade granola (using soaked & ready oats)
  • Strawberry Coconut Muffins
  • Banana Coconut Muffins
  • Carrot Molasses mini-muffins
  • Fresh fruits - bananas, oranges, apples & mangoes
  • Dried fruits - pineapple, mango, apples & raisins
  • Larabars (favorites: cherry pie & apple pie)
  • Coconut cookies
  • Oatmeal Raisin Sourdough Cookies

I like to use my reusable sandwich bags for packing our snacks and individual plastic containers for our meals. For cleaning our hands I often just have us wash with water and then use natural hand sanitizer, which smells so much better then the commercial kinds you see everywhere. I like to pump some into a small ziplock bag because of the restrictions on liquids.

Not only is this list good for traveling via airplanes and car, but it is great to always have these on hand and ready to go! I often try to have some of these made every week to take with us whenever we head into town or the city. If I don't, I end up buying plantain chips that only make my girls even more hungry and cranky!

A Penny For Your Thoughts

NaturoKit Winner!

Posted on 15:49 by Unknown

Thanks everybody for entering the giveaway!

Before I announce the winner, I want to share something neat. Last week my horse, Zoeva, stepped on my foot (I was wearing flip-flops)... it was instantly black and blue. Thankfully, nothing was broken... but it hurted so bad! I limped to the house and grabbed my NaturoKit. I took out the Arnica and put 3 pellets under my tongue, then I took some Crisis Calm as I was feeling weak and dizzy from the pain. I felt much better after resting a few minutes.

Next, I took out the Calendula succus and dapped it on the nasty bruise... there were several light cuts that needed to be cleaned. I also had some liquid Arnica drops that I dapped around the bruised area and my whole foot. It was started to to throb and cramp up pretty bad. I finish it off by putting some of the Wild Weed Salve and that instantly soothed the burning cuts.

My hubby got me the ice pack and laid down with my foot up. That helped the pain a lot. About 1 hour later, I looked at my foot and saw that the black and blue colors were gone! It had turn a light red and the pain was almost gone. It was tender to walk on, but not too bad. By the evening, I was able to walk on it like normal with no pain... just slight tenderness.

Talk about awesome! Now you know why I love using natural remedies! They aid the body to heal itself and that is so important. Thanks to Julie and Padeen, you can now own a first aid kit with all natural remedies guaranteed do the job right!

Now, the winner of the Naturo MiniKit is:
Kristen Marie (kristenlila@----.com)

Congratulates Kristen!! I hope you will will love your kit as much as I do  :o)

Now, for the rest of you... don't forget that you can get $5 off on a NaturoKit (good until August 10th)! When you make your purchase, enter: DCMAKENOISE

Have a great weekend and stay tuned for more giveaways to come! Hugs!

Coming Soon: My First eBook - Just Making Ice Cream!

Posted on 20:44 by Unknown

Yep! Very soon I will be releasing my first ebook, Just Making Ice Cream: Over 70 Delicious Recipes Made With Nourishing Ingredients!

Over the last couple weeks, every spare moment I had went to finishing up my ice cream book. My mom has been helping with editing and I've been working with my "ice cream testers" via email with GREAT feedback (thanks gals!).

Honestly, I am so ready to get this done. I've been so busy with getting ready for our furlough to the states, finishing up with the ebook and taking care of my family that I am in serious need of some R & R.

Why An Ice Cream eBook?
Because I LOVE ice cream! When using the right ingredients, it is so nourishing and delicious. I would have no problem with my family eating ice cream everyday using my recipes. This is a fantastic way to enjoy raw milk, egg yolks and your choice of sweetener.

I actually started playing around with the idea of writing this book almost 2 years ago! I never really committed to do it until just a few months ago. Why? Time. I wanted to make sure I had the time to really do it. I've heard from friends that making a cookbook or ebook is time consuming.  Thankfully, the Lord worked it out over this past few months by bringing a special friend from Mexico to work with us and help me with the kids. She has been a huge blessing, help and encouragement. Thanks Gaby!

Chocolate Nutbutter Cookie Dough Ice Cream

I know I am a little late with getting this ebook out, but who says you can only have ice cream during the summer?! In my family, ice cream is a year-round treat. In Just Making Ice Cream, you will find recipes for all occasions! You will also find information on ingredients,  different types of ice cream machines, top 4 popular makers, no-maker methods and more.

Stay tuned! I will try to share a little more later!

Review & Giveaway: NaturoKits

Posted on 11:31 by Unknown

I am thrilled to be introducing all of you to NaturoKits... founded in 2009 by 2 mamas and licensed naturopathic physicians, Julie & Padeen. They are dedicated to helping parents meet the needs of their families simply and naturally with just a handful of first aid tools.

These mamas have thoughtfully and carefully created a wonderful first aid kit, the Basic First Aid NaturoKit, using a small, canvas travel pack filled with natural remedies for everyday use and common accidents. Giving parents the confidence and resources to care for their families at home and while traveling.

Why You Should Own a NaturoKit
Here's a blurb from the company:

  • NaturoKits are the first and only Naturopathic Care Packages.
  • We have many years of personal and clinical experience with the remedies in our naturopathic first aid kids and can testify to their quality and effectiveness.
  • We have written the instructions so you can be assured of dependable information that is easy to understand and use.
  • Our health kits are competitively-priced and include a cute, compact bag and full instructions on use.
  • Refills are available and all remedies can be purchased individually.
  • The remedies, if stored and used properly, should last many seasons.

Tuck NaturoKits® into your purse, your backpack, your glove box, your suitcase, your medicine cabinet, your desk drawer and your workshop. You will have peace of mind and assurance that relief is at hand. When exploring the world of alternative medicine for naturopathic treatments for you or your loved ones, you may have come across "natural cures" which seemed a bit dubious. Be assured that we at NaturoKits have worked hard to develope first aid packages which contain simple and easy information and resources for you to safely and effectively manage minor injuries and complaints on your own (often while approprate medical care is being sought).

Our aim is to educate and empower you in your healthcare choices. And that is why we created NaturoKits: Naturopathic Care Packages.

My Personal Experience
About a month ago, I received the Basic First Aid NaturoKit to try with my family. I love it! The canvas bag looks cute, instructions are easy and simple to follow, the remedies are neatly in place and I even had enough room to include my Chamomilla homeopathic remedy for Tobi (going through teething). I've used the Crisis Calm with my kids a few times already and noticed the change after they've taken a couple bad falls on our concrete floor. I am pleased with how effective the Calendula Succus tincture was on my daughter's, Tabi, cut that she got from our cat. It cleared up quickly with no pain or infection! You know how cat scratches can be painful and dirty!

I am very familiar with homeopathy, herbal medicine and I've been using to prevent & cure my family of different ailments ever since Naomi was born. I love knowing that I can care for my family with confident and knowledge without a doctor. Out here in the "wild west" of Honduras... I am basically the doctor! I look back over the years and truly believe that God put that desire within me to learn & know how to care for my family naturally. I have learned much since Naomi was born and the only time we've been to a doctor was for broken bones (my hubby... fell off a horse & later a bike) and blood tests. I have treated my family for sprains, stomach aches, bites, cuts, infections, coughs, loose stools, burns and more with natural remedies (homeopathy, herbal medicine & essential oils) and wholesome food. From my personal experience... natural remedies DO WORK! It takes patience and consistency to see results. So often we expect it to work quickly like conventional medicine, but you have to remember... they are bandages covering the root of the problem. Natural remedies dig deep to the root of the problem and help the body to restore order & bring about long-term healing.

Homeopathy is known to work fairly quickly. I have personal experience with using Arnica after each of my 3 births. I am amazed at how good I feel when I take it every 30 minutes, but when I forget to take a dose... oh, I am sore! But what I love about Arnica (and homeopathy in general) is not only does it take the pain away, but it also promotes healing of the area that is sore! I have found myself feeling almost normal within 24 hours after my births! Common over the counter painkillers take away the pain temporarily, but don't promote long-term healing. That is the beauty and power of homeopathy!

Even though I love this simple kit... it would be even better if they could add into their kits arnica rub for immediate external relief. We have a tub of it and use it on stubbed toes, smashed fingers, bruises and sore muscles. I also included in my kit liquid arnica drops for my little man, Tobi. The little tabs don't dissolve quickly and he often gags on them. I know you can dissolve the tabs in water and give it to him with a dropper, but that takes too long. It is best to have it now and ready to go when needed. He's had some contact with our concrete floor one too many times and it is so nice to have this little canvas NaturoKit on hand ready to meet his needs of pain relief, calming and healing!

The Basic First Aid NaturoKit is a "must-have" in every family (especially missionary families!) who desire to meet the health needs of their kids in a natural, healthy and simple manner! Along with clear instructions... it includes 5 homeopathic remedies (Apis, Arnica, Cantharis & Hypericum), 2 herbal medicine (Calendula Succus & Wild Weed Salve), 1 bottle Crisis Calm flower essence and 1 bottle Activated Charcoal. These natural remedies addresses over 40 first aid situations - burns, cuts, bites, sunburn, hives, food poisoning, indigestion, anxiety, bruising, allergic reactions and more!
